Hence step #1: Prepare...I actually make more money from writing than as a pediatrician (heck, the guy who ran the snowplow made more money than us pediatricians, lol!) but preparing that cushion made the leap of faith a bit easier....and if you read to the end of the post you saw that I certainly experienced publishing misfortune almost immediately with my "sure thing" being yanked away by my NYC publisher. Which leads to Step #5, of course.

Leaving your job is like stepping on a cloud. A lot of faith and courage. And a sudden realization that publishing is not a sure thing, even when your novel is in the hands of a publisher. I would assume that from your practice, you had enough put aside to last out such a sudden change in fortune. Other writers may not be so lucky and end up in trouble right away.

Excellent point, Megan! Not only your online persona should reflect who you want to be to your audience (in other words you don't have to expose your warts and dirty laundry in the name of authenticity, but you do need to reveal the real you, your dreams, who you aspire to be), but your personal interactions should also do that. Can't tell you how many times I've seen authors blow up at booksellers or conference organizers over things out of their control.

It's the whole honey/bee thing <g></g>

Thanks for sharing. It's amazing how far common courtesy can get you. Handwritten thank you cards don't need to take more than a few minutes, but the impact can be astonishing.

I see a lot of budding writers online making snarky remarks and trying to build a tough-guy reputation and sometimes I get stressed thinking that I need to adopt this persona to succeed, but I think when it comes down to who you would rather work with, most people will pick polite over snarky.

I love the candle idea. I use that with my Scentsy and a scent called "French Kiss." It is a very earthy, woodsy scent (but not like dirt and leaves or anything). I carry a peice of the melting wax in my bag, like you suggested, so I can harness the power of the smell wherever I go!

Great post! Especially for me - someone who has a hard time getting on track sometimes.
